Catherine Rogers works across analogue and digital photography, drawing on both historical and contemporary photographic processes. Her practice explores landscape, photographic history and the relationship between image and truth.

Catherine Rogers is a Sydney-based photographic artist whose practice spans more than four decades. Working across analogue and digital processes, she explores photography's histories, materials and possibilities through images that question perception, memory and the relationship between image and truth.

Her work encompasses traditional film photography, pinhole cameras, camera-less image making, cyanotypes and contemporary digital printing. Alongside her studio practice, Rogers has undertaken extensive research into the origins of photography and the work of early photographic pioneers, particularly William Henry Fox Talbot, Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre.

Landscape has remained a central concern throughout her career. Oceans, horizons, forests, skies, architecture and traces of human intervention recur throughout her work, often presented in ways that blur the boundary between observation and invention. Drawing on both historical and contemporary photographic techniques, Rogers investigates how photographs construct meaning and how easily they can persuade, mislead or transform our understanding of the world.

Her photographs have been exhibited widely, including the survey exhibition Evidence and The Visible at the Australian National University Drill Hall Gallery in 2022. She has also undertaken artist residencies in Australia and internationally, including a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2023, where she researched early French photography while developing new bodies of work.

Rogers continues to work across a range of photographic processes, maintaining an enduring interest in the material qualities of the medium and the rich history from which contemporary photography has evolved.
