Horizon #3 The Pacific Ocean

Looking Straight Ahead (2012–2020, Ongoing)

Colour prints 50cm wide, height variable, on A1 (portrait orientation) paper

The larger project, Horizon, of which these images are one part, considers the horizon – that named place which does not exist – through images of it seen as the meeting of the sea and sky.

The first works in the larger series, Bodies of Water #1 and #2, commenced in 1977, comprised black and white, silver-gelatin photographs of eight major bodies of water of the world, each identified and named on the matt.

Important to the larger Horizon project is that each photograph places the horizon line that marks the division – or the coming together – of the sea and the sky, exactly in the centre of the image – the sea and sky equally represented.

Photographs in this series have been made with a variety of film and digital photographic technologies in black and white and colour. This is an ongoing project.
