Horizon #6
Horizon - That Named Place Which Is Not One
Various sizes, pigment ink on various papers
The larger project, Horizons, considers the horizon as an entity – or not – through images of the sea and sky photographed in equal parts.
This series of large colour prints deviates from my original format of the equality of the sea and the sky. In this series, the sky and the sea have been ripped apart – at the horizon – and the parts reassembled to make another, new, photographic picture of an event or a place that never existed. Most of these images are made up of many photographs.
While at once sublime, calming and awesome, the sea and the sky are each capable of terror and destruction. On one hand, the aural and visual rhythms of the waves are soothing and comforting, the regular light and dark, day and night of the sky predictable and reassuring. On the other hand, the sea and sky can be sources of tremendous power and unstoppable forces.
But as I sit and gaze, there is an endless
Space still beyond… From the 1819 poem The Infinite, byGiacomo Leopardi, as translated by Henry Reed
